The Office of Medical Education in the School of Medicine (SOM) is excited to host the second cohort of the UMMC SOM Education Grant Academy. The aim of this academy is to provide grant development support to SOM faculty to increase research in medical education through building grant writing capacity and increasing the success rate of extramural research proposals. This one-year training program in grant writing is designed for SOM faculty with a demonstrated interest in medical education research. Six research fellows will be selected. The program will begin in June 2022, and last for a year. An application is required, and it can be accessed via this link<https://forms.office.com/r/whwkMfkrzn>. The application is due on Wednesday, April 6, and notification of awardees is planned for the last week of April.

The UMMC SOM Education Grant Academy will be conducted by Hanover Research, a grant development firm whose work focuses on helping institutions compete more successfully for grant funding. Hanover has supported awards ranging from $5000 to $30 million from federal, state, and foundation funding sources (e.g., NIH, National Endowment for the Humanities, NSF, HRSA, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Department of Education). Other institutions using Handover Research services include the University of Houston, Georgia Tech, Stanford University, University of Maryland, University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Penn State, and Auburn University.

The year of training will include individually customized proposal review, revision, production support, and assistance with aligning research priorities to funding trends and opportunities. Specific areas of support are grant-seeking capacity development, funding research, pre-proposal support, proposal support, and proposal development. In addition to these services, academy fellows will gain access to a range of on-demand resources such as grant alerts and calendars, data lab, thought leadership (e.g., access to white papers, quarterly webinars), and a research library.

Applicants with a demonstrated interest in medical education research are encouraged to apply. Deliverables for the academy include a concept paper for appropriate funding agencies and a complete draft of a grant proposal which are expected by the end of the one-year training.
