Call for Members – Medical Education Research Guidelines and Procedures Ad Hoc Committee
The School of Medicine (SOM) is strengthening its focus on education through the development of programming to support medical education research and teaching scholarship.
With growing capacity for education-based research, we anticipate an increase in requests to engage medical students in research. This ad hoc committee will be charged to develop guidelines and procedures for such requests to ensure that medical students are
protected and that the need for faculty access is considered. This ad hoc committee will also consider the resources needed for education-based research and the availability of these resources at UMMC and within the SOM. If you are interested in serving on
this committee, send a brief statement of interest outlining your experiences in educational research and your curriculum vitae to
Dr. Lecretia A. Buckley by March 15, 2022.
Medical Education Research Guidelines and Procedures Ad Hoc Committee Charge
The Medical Education Research Guidelines and Procedures Committee is charged to develop guidelines and procedures for education research in undergraduate medical education
and graduate medical education. All research requests including those by University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) faculty members, researchers, or students and research requests originating outside of UMMC for research in which medical students or residents
are serving as research participants will be subject to the developed guidelines and procedures.
The guidelines address criteria for the topics/focus of the proposed research study, the number and level of medical students proposed to participate, the time commitment
for participation, the data sources requested, and other criteria deemed appropriate. The developed guidelines are not to address Institutional Research Board issues such as determining the type of consent that would be required of participants. Researchers
must be approved by the designated body and IRB to engage in education-based research with SOM students and/or residents.
