The School of Medicine seeks faculty members from all departments within the school to serve as members of the Curriculum Committee, Promotions Committee, and their subcommittees for the current and upcoming academic year. Information about the committee charges, needs, and meeting frequencies can be found by following the links below. Faculty are invited to nominate others or to self-nominate. If you nominate someone else, we ask that you please confirm their willingness to serve before submitting the nomination. We request that all nominations be submitted by noon on Monday, April 29.

The School of Medicine needs educators from the foundational and clinical sciences to author and peer review problem-based learning sessions for the M2 Integrated Curriculum. Participants will develop problem-based/case-based learning opportunities for second-year medical students. Learning objectives and template will be provided to the authors. After completion of the activities, outcome data will be collected, and curricula will be submitted for publication to the online MedEdPortal, an AAMC, peer-reviewed publication indexed by PubMed, which can be included in promotions packets and on all professional CVs. The re-designed preclinical advising program pairs students and faculty members to provide students with additional support during the preclinical training phase. The program assists students with transitioning from the undergraduate environment to the professional campus. The required advising meetings (1 per semester) focus on challenges students generally face during the M1 and M2 years. Students and advisors are encouraged to go beyond the required meetings and find collaboration opportunities, such as engaging in research or seeing patients together. Advisors can also serve as a valuable source of advice for students facing challenging situations who do not necessarily wish to talk

From summer 2022 to June 2023, the Office of Medical Education hosted the second cohort for a Medical Education Research Grant Academy with six faculty members. After completing the year of training with Hanover Research, each member of the cohort shares their progress, insights, and reflections on grant writing for medical education research. The session will be held virtually, on Wednesday, August 16, at 3:00 pm. Join this event to learn more about funding your medical education research ideas from concept paper to grant proposal.

2023 Annual Town Hall Meeting
The School of Medicine (SOM) annual town hall meeting will be held virtually on Wednesday, August 16, at 4:00 pm. Dr. Loretta Jackson-Williams, Vice Dean for Medical Education, will provide reflections of the 2022-23 academic year and highlight school priorities for this academic year while demonstrating how the school's five administrative offices work together to accomplish the school's mission to train "skilled and compassionate physicians to provide high quality and equitable health care particularly to the state's residents, including diverse and underserved populations."

The School of Medicine seeks passionate medical educators from the clinical and foundational sciences to join an educational writing collaborative as authors or peer reviewers. Participants will develop problem-based/case-based learning opportunities for first and second year medical students. Learning objectives and templates will be provided to the authors. After completion of the activities, outcomes data will be collected and the curricula submitted for publication to the online MedEdPortal, an AAMC, peer-reviewed publication indexed by PubMed which can be included in promotions packets and on all professional CVs.

Dear Faculty,
Each year we pair 2-3 M1 and/or M2 students with various faculty members to serve as informal advisors and mentors. We try to match specialty interest where we can, but given how early it is in their curriculum we find that having anyone they can connect to and go to for advice is beneficial. We ask that you meet with each student one time this semester for 30 minutes to 1 hour to discuss their progress in medical school, the challenges they've faced, and their future plans. The School of Medicine Medical Education Grant Academy is in its second year. Each year, six SOM faculty members participate in group and individualized sessions to support the development of a grant proposal for a medical education research project. Content includes fundable proposals, finding the right funding opportunity, how to write a concept paper, program officer outreach, and writing your narrative. Medical Education Research Grant Academy: Progress, Insights, and Reflections following A Year of Training

In the summer of 2021, the Office of Medical Education launched a Medical Education Research Grant Academy with six faculty members in its inaugural class. After completing the year of training with Hanover Research, each member of the cohort shares their progress, insights, and reflections on grant writing and medical education research. The session will be held virtually, on Tuesday, May 3, at noon. Join this event to learn more about funding your medical education research ideas from concept paper to grant proposal.

The SOM is developing a new department which will have a focus on education. One of the first steps in the process is the identification of a dynamic leader for the department.

In 2014, Dr. Jerry Clark in the Office of Student Affairs along with the Office of Medical Education established a "House system" (loosely based on Hogwarts in Harry Potter and named for some of the all-time giants in UMMC school history) for our incoming medical students as a way to establish community as well as give the students direct access to a faculty mentor. Throughout the year and even their medical school career, the mentor will work with these students on a regular basis. Clinical Vignette Writing Circle Paused

The Office of Medical Education has paused the Clinical Vignette Writing Circle (CVWC) and cancelled all planned sessions through June. This pause will be used to restructure the CVWC to meet faculty needs while considering faculty constraints. Your feedback is needed to ensure that this effort is effective. The School of Medicine family is in mourning with the passing of Ms. Virginia Covington earlier this week. For many years, "Mama V" was a fixture within our school, providing advice and support to generations of Mississippi physicians. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 27 from 4PM to 7PM and again on Friday, January 28 at 10AM at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home in Flowood. The funeral service will be held following visitation at 11AM with burial in Parkway Memorial Cemetery. In memory of Ms. Virginia and with her family's blessing, The Virginia Covington Student Fund has been created

Let's work on some items together in the next Clinical Vignette Writing Circle.

Submit up to three assessment items for collaborative work during the October 28 session of the Clinical Vignette Writing Circle (CVWC). During this workshop style setting, engage in reviews and revisions of items as you identify flaws and ways to eliminate them in your assessments. The CVWC promotes increased integration of clinical and basic science content into assessments and addresses student feedback. For example, in the 2021 AAMC Graduation Questionnaire, only 70% of UMMC respondents indicated that "basic science coursework had sufficient illustrations of clinical relevance." This
